Single Latch Lock Vs. Mortise

This is a very popular question since the "out break" of overseas single latch locks have hit the North American market. Mortise type electronic locks are the only locks franchises will accept due to it's ability to provide security to the guest and accountability of who entered the guest's room. Single latch locks do not offer the same security and are just as secure as a residential bedroom door.

Advantages of the Mortise Type
The Mortise type is the official standard type of cardlock for the lodging industry and recognized by franchises for many years. The mortise type is an electro-mechanical device that also contains a built in deadbolt for guest privacy. A hotel mortise type lock will allow a master card to enter the room even if the deadbolt is engaged, an absolute must for franchise requirements. The mortise type also has an override key feature that is independent of the handle, meaning the keyway is not built into the handle. All operation is built into the mortise. By having all mechanical operation built into the mortise, electronic sensors are also built into the mortise, that's why it's considered and electro-mechanical device. The sensors detect if a hard key is being used so the lock can go into a secured administration mode, mainly used during programming. Also, the built in sensors are used to determine if the latch was pulled in by the turn of the handle to truely know if somebody entered the room. Knowing when a card was read is not enough information, which is the only thing that Single Latch Locks offer. Most importantly you must also know if the handle was turned at that time the card was used, hence undeniable entry into the room. Accountability of room entry is important. Advantages of the Single Latch Type
The only true advantage is the reduced labor involved with cutting the door. A Single Latch Lock will easily install on any door that has a hole drilled for a stanard backset. Do it yourselft installation is also possible. Here is a picture of the Single Latch type. This is the mecanical piece that goes in the pocket of the door.
